Fit to be Wed: Whipped into Shape at Bridal Boot Camp

By Jenifer Parks; staff writer

Brides – to – be always want to look their best on the big day.

But, ironically, while they may dream about their wedding from a young age, planning the nuptials often takes over and they neglect themselves until the last minute.

Barbra Beres isn’t taking any chances.

When she walks down the aisle this November, she wants to look fabulous in the dress she so lovingly picked out more than a year ago.

“I have to make sure I still fit in it,” laughs the 29-year old data analyst from Edmonton, who is tying the knot with fiancé Michael Peebles in Jasper Nov. 11.

So she decided to whip herself into shape by sending herself to Bridal Boot Camp.

The program is offered at Defining Eve, a personal training studio at 10920 88 Ave.

“We noticed a lot of brides – to – be were coming to us for one-on -one training. They had a relatively short time frame and wanted to work out at a high intensity, so we designed a special program for them,” says Alexandra Senkow, who started up the studio in 2003.

The program consists of two one – hour classes a week, The exercise regimen involves spin (indoor cycling), stability ball work, strength training with weights, squats, lunges and army crawl.

“That’s a favorite. You go from plank position into a pushup and back to plank. You’ll really feel it in your shoulders, arms and core,” says Senkow.

After her first class, Beres says she was feeling pretty sore.

“I didn’t expect for it to be easy. You get there and you just go. We were just huffing it through. It was quite a shock to the system, but worth it,” she says.

Beres doesn’t want to look like G.I Jane in white satin coming down the aisle, but she does hope to drop 10 pounds and tone her arms, midsection and back.

“I’m wearing a dress with spaghetti straps and an exposed back, so I want to look the best I can in it,” she says.

Senkow says there are other benefits to boot camp.

“Women may not only lose weight and tone up, they gain more energy to deal with the stresses of planning a wedding. “It’s great for them to be with other brides who are going through the same thing. It helps keep them motivated.”

The cost of the six week program is $99 if women go one day a week, and $198 if they go twice a week.

Homework is assigned, which includes a series of exercises women can do on the nights they don’t come to the studio.

Senkow says women have seen some great results.

“We had a girl who lost 10 pounds, in 12 weeks – she did the program twice – and she had to have her dress refitted because she went down one whole size,” she says.
