Success Story: Jorge & Maria

Jorge and Mara's Success Story

Jorge

Last summer I came to the realization had not exercised in more than 25 years. I was feeling tired at work and was noticing the repercussions of being overweight. My wife Maria, and my daughters encouraged me to become active again and suggested that I begin working with a personal trainer. And so in June of 2004 I began to work with a trainer from Defining Eve twice a week.

I knew that I needed the coaching, enthusiasm and instruction of a personal trainer to get me back on track. Having a trainer come to my home also helped me to stay consistent with my workouts, which was important to my success.

Though I started exercising again primarily to improve my personal health, I have experienced many other benefits. Exercise has helped me to become a fitter, more relaxed version of myself. I have already lost 40 lbs, and gone down several clothing sizes.

Today, I continue to work with a trainer twice a week, but I try to exercise whenever I can. It’s really a habit now. In fact, whenever I travel I make sure that the hotel has a fitness facility or recreation center where I can exercise. It does come in handy to have a gym when you travel- since I’ve been chased by wild dogs while running in the streets of Peru. But exercising outdoors has also brought me some wonderful experiences like running in the rain in Ireland and racing around a track in York.

At first I started exercising because I wanted to lose weight to lower my cholesterol and to do something active together with my daughters. For the first year I trained with a trainer three times a week. Now in my second year of training, I work with a trainer twice a week and hop on the treadmill whenever I can.

Today, my cholesterol is under control, I can swap clothes with my daughters, I can fit back into my old clothes and clothes fit me better now (at a smaller size). I feel good and I look good. It’s a compliment when friends say that I look like my daughters- or that they can’t believe that I’m their mom.

In the beginning- it’s a lot of hard work, there’s no doubt. But with time, a special bond has developed between my trainers- and myself and the sessions become really fun.

Having a personal trainer has helped me to work on the areas that I really need to work on- not just to tone, but to improve my posture and flexibility. And now I can audition for Cirque de Soleil (thanks to all the balance exercises on the stability ball).

Really, making exercise a habit is about finding balance between quality/style of life and exercise and diet. And it’s never too late and you can never be too old to start exercising.
